Program Description:
The Department of Medicine sponsors two residency programs: a three-year categorical program in Internal Medicine and a one-year transitional residency program. Each candidate must review and sign the Residency Agreement form.
Categorical Program
The categorical residency program provides three years of training for residents wishing to become board certified in internal medicine. Following completion of the program, residents may also elect to practice primary care in internal medicine or continue their medical education by pursuing sub-specialty training.

The program is structured to allow each resident to acquire the necessary knowledge and technical skills to become a competent and independent practitioner. The program provides increasing responsibility throughout each year of training and a vigorous Internal Medicine Curriculum.
Many of our residents continue their medical training in sub-specialty areas; residents have done fellowships at University of Maryland, George Washington University, and Allegheny Hospital in Pennsylvania.

Transitional Program
The transitional year residency is a one-year program providing a well-balanced curriculum of graduate medical education in multiple clinical disciplines and is designed to facilitate the choice of and/or preparation for a given specific specialty.
Following completion of the transitional year program, residents may choose to continue their education in a medical specialty or pursue a non-clinical area.

Both the categorical program and transitionalprogram are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
