Lymphedema Services for Adults at Maryland General Hospital
Lymphedema is a chronic form of swelling caused when the lymphatic system (The drainage network in the body that helps keep bodily fluids in balance and helps fight infections) is not working correctly. This problem causes fluids and protein to build up in the body's tissues. There is no cure and it can become disfiguring. People with lymphedema are also at an increased risk of infection.
Triggers for lymphedema may include: a traumatic injury, infection, cancer treatment or severe chronic venous insufficiency and may develop within a few months after a surgical procedure or years later. Symptoms can include:
- Swelling of the arms or legs on one side
- Feeling of heaviness or discomfort in the affected limb
- Swelling not relieved by elevation
- Hardening of the skin
- Pitting of the skin leaving indentations
Our services
The goal of lymphedema treatment is to reduce swelling and keep the swelling from coming back. Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a safe, reliable, and non-invasive treatment for lymphedema. The treatment includes:
- Therapeutic exercise to help encourage the fluid to move out of your limbs
- Manual lymph drainage (MLD), a special type of massage
- Specialized bandaging of the arm or leg to reduce swelling
- Specialized skin care to help prevent infections
- Compression garments to maintain smaller limb size
