Radiology (Imaging Services)

The Radiology Department provides a wide range of radiology procedures, including general radiography, special procedures, CAT scan, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine studies, ultrasound and portable radiography, and interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Maryland General Hospital has contracted with Diagnostic Imaging Specialists, P.A. (DISPA), the University of Maryland Medical System's professional radiology practice group for all imaging services at MGH.

Dan Khumar, M.D., is the new full-time department chief based at Maryland General.

All of DISPA's radiologists are board certified, and it has specialists in neuroradiology, pediatric radiology and breast radiology. The practice is staffed to perform diagnostic readings, including those done by specialists, on the same day tests are completed.

Service has also been improved. "Ninety-nine percent of our outpatient procedures are interpreted on the same day, with a transcribed report being mailed within 24 hours." says Gary Brandon, Maryland General's MGH Clinical Department Administrator. The mammography service now provides patient results, along with a letter explaining them, within seven days of the mammogram being done. "Unless a comparative view or report is required we are reaching our results reporting goal 100 percent of the time," added Mr. Brandon.

Maryland General has made a large investment in technology to complement these changes. The hospital has converted to an all-digital format, which permits the distribution of pictures through the Picture Archive Communication System (PACS). One of the benefits of PACS is the ability to read a patient's images from computers located on any nursing unit in the hospital. In the near future, this option will also be available on the Internet, allowing referring physicians to view their patient's images from their home or office, with the report and technical information attached. Maryland General also recently purchased a new multi-slice CT scanner capable of faster scanning and of performing tests such as coronary artery scans, lung screenings and vessel measurements.

Because patient films are now stored electronically, images can be viewed from several locations simultaneously. Electronic storage makes it easier to retrieve images and less likely for them to get lost. Specialty consults will be done after the tests are digitized and sent to the University of Maryland, where they will be read.
