ACE Unit - Acute Care for the Elderly
Committed to a healthier future for our community.

Trends show that the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population is adults over the age of 65, and that a significant number of elderly are older than 85 years of age. That is why Maryland General Hospital has expanded our Geriatric Services by opening a unique, inpatient ACE Unit, specifically designed to provide "Acute Care for the Elderly." Our special Geriatric Services Program represents a dedication to seniors who have done so much to make our community what it is today, and represents our commitment to caring for them now and into the future.

A Unique and Caring Environment

Patients in the new ACE Unit are cared for by a highly-trained, compassionate team of medical professionals. The team members help to coordinate their care, identify and address medical and social issues quickly and work to assist in discharge planning to make their stay as short as possible.

Each senior patient will find comfort in the newly renovated center and can expect the following:

  • Comprehensive assessment - including evaluations of pain, cognition, function, medication, wounds and deep vein thrombosis.

  • Comfortable, specially equipped rooms designed for falls prevention.
  • Appropriate discharge planning.

  • Daily team medical care review.

  • Preventative measures discussed, reviewed and documented, such as immunizations and advanced directives.

  • "Smart Cards" given upon discharge - allows for a quick reference of prescribed medications, medical conditions and physician and emergency contact information.

A Committed, Interdisciplinary Team Covers all the Bases.

In order to assure the utmost in care, the interdisciplinary team on the ACE unit is headed by geriatricians, a nurse practitioner and specially trained nursing staff. The team also includes members who specialize in pharmacy, rehabilitation, nutrition, social work, and care management. Together, their efforts achieve the ultimate goal of a healthier patient.

Patients must be 65 years of age or older and have an acute condition requiring hospitalization,
such as:
  • Failure to thrive
  • Change in mental status
  • Dehydration
  • Dementia
  • Delirium
  • Falls
  • Incontinence
  • Poly pharmacy (multple prescriptions evaluated)
  • End of life care
  • Palliative care
Patients will be followed by their primary care physician while on the unit. Members of the unit's interdisciplinary team are also on hand to provide comprehensive care.
