FAQs - Managed Care

Over the last 25 years, health care has dramatically evolved and today more than 85% of the insured population is enrolled in some kind of managed care plan. These plans establish agreements between physicians, hospitals and other health care programs to provide medical services.

Managed Care includes many different kinds of health insurance and health care plans and Maryland General Hospital accepts patients from several managed care companies (with the appropriate referral and authorization). Maryland General contracts with companies on a local, regional and national level for the following types of plans:

Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO)
Point of Service Plans (POS)
Preferred Provider Plans (PPO)
Managed Care Organizations (MCO)
