Maryland General's emergency department is designed to ensure that our patients are seen as quickly as possible and are provided with the most sophisticated level of care.
At Maryland General Hospital, we realize the last thing you need during an emergency is to have to wait. Under our system, patients receive bedside registration and quick triage.
Shortly after being registered, you are visited by a physician and other clinical staff. This Rapid Access Team comes to you as a group so everyone hears your history and current problems at one time.

The Emergency Department at Maryland General Hospital provides 24-hour evaluation and emergency treatment. Emergency care at Maryland General is comprehensive, serving patients of all ages. This terrific care is delivered by our experienced team of emergency experts, who are specially trained to treat your serious illnesses and minor injuries which may include:
- Chest pain - complete evaluation is conducted in the ER, including blood work, EKGs, cardiology consultation and stress test
- Strokes - Maryland General has been designated as a Primary Stroke Center and has a Neurocare Unit
- Congestive Heart Failure
- Pulmonary conditions - COPD, Asthma and Pneumonia
- Gastrointestinal problems (GI)
- Kidney failure
- Pediatrics
- Geriatrics - Evaluation and diagnostic care for the elderly
- Minor trauma & orthopedic injuries
Patients who come to the Emergency Department (ED) are stabilized, discharged, transferred to the appropriate specialty facility at the discretion of their physician, or admitted to Maryland General Hospital.
The ED also features an Urgent Care program which allows patients needing less emergent care to be seen faster. The Urgent Care team at Maryland General gets you in and out so that you can get back to your normal activities.
