Dermatology
Dermatology is a specialty that diagnoses and treats problems of the skin such as skin cancer, moles, melanomas and various types of rashes. Maryland General’s Family Health Center provides care in this medical specialty.
Endocrinology
Endocrinology is the treatment of disorders of the body’s glands, such as the thyroid and adrenal glands, and pancreas. The Joslin Diabetes Center provides care in this medical specialty.
Gastroenterology
The treatment of digestive disorders and conditions such as abdominal pain, ulcers, diarrhea and jaundice is called gastroenterology. Maryland General’s GI laboratory, where patients receive tests to determine what their medical problem is, consists of two procedure rooms that are equipped to handle elective and emergency procedures. Maryland General’s Family Health Center provides care in this medical specialty.
Hematology
Hematology is the treatment of blood disorders such as anemia, sickle cell disease and hemophilia. Patients normally begin their treatment with a visit to their family doctor, who then would refer the patient to a specialist, depending on the severity of their case. Maryland General’s Family Health Center provides care in this medical specialty.
Infectious Disease
This specialty diagnoses, treats and prevents all types of diseases related to bacteria and viruses, including AIDS. Patients are usually seen in the Family Health Center and have the benefit of receiving their care from practitioners at the Institute for Human Virology, if their condition warrants it. Maryland General’s Family Health Center provides care in this medical specialty.
Internal Medicine
This specialty treats common illnesses and complex problems for adolescents, adults and the elderly. Internists can refer patients to specialty care if it is warranted. Internal medicine is offered to patients at the hospital’s Family Health Center.
Podiatry
Podiatrists at Maryland General Hospital diagnose, treat and perform surgery to correct problems with the feet. We have an affiliation with Podiatry Associates, which treats conditions such as the removal of warts, foot and ankle trauma and orthotics.
