About the Intensive Care Unit
Maryland General Hospital’s state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) includes 18 large patient rooms that are specially designed to help our physicians, nurses, and staff provide high quality care for patients facing serious health problems.
All patient rooms are private and designed with windows that open onto the corridor to help medical staff monitor each patient closely. To enhance patient care, ICU rooms also include:
- Ceiling mounted booms, allowing for 330 degree access around the patient’s bed
- Specially equipped beds designed to prevent falls
- Beds that translate common medical terms and instructions into several languages to improve patient/caregiver communication.
Railed bariatric lift systems are available in four rooms.
Because the privacy of our patients and their families is important, the unit includes a separate admissions area, two family waiting rooms and a private conference room for consultations.
Two isolation rooms are also included on the unit to provide a higher level of protection for patients at an increased risk of developing infections.
