The Maryland General Cultural Competency Program

Our mission

The purpose of our Cultural Competency Program is to support Maryland General Hospital's mission to improve the health and well-being of our community by creating and sustaining an inclusive environment. In line with our core values of respect, integrity, teamwork, and excellence (the R.I.T.E. Touch), this environment will welcome staff, patients, and visitors regardless of their age, race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation. It will also foster positive patient outcomes by acknowledging each patient's unique beliefs, needs, and culture.
Cultural Competency

Who we are

The Cultural Competency Workgroup is made up of Maryland General employees who meet on a bi-weekly basis and work with the leadership team to ensure that our work environment is inclusive, embraces the diversity of the community, and encourages an atmosphere of mutual respect.

Our goals

  1. Develop policies, structures, and environments that promote cultural competence.
  2. Integrate the concepts of communication, cultural competence, and patient- and family-centered care into the operations of the hospital.
  3. Implement a training program for employees that will enable the hospital to provide culturally competent care in a positive work environment.
  4. Strengthen internal and external communications that reflect the organization’s commitment to providing culturally competent patient- and family-centered care.
